West Indies ‘Chase’ leads to a draw in 2nd Test Match

Roston Chase’s mighty innings, lead West Indies to improbable draw in the second Test at Jamaica against India and ensured that the visitors didn’t extend their lead beyond 1-0. For his career-best first-class score, Blackwood’s impressive strike rate of 107.75 is the highest by any West Indies batsman registering a fifty or more in both the innings of a Test match and the third highest strike rate overall. Roston Chase scored an unbeaten 137 off 269 balls while Jason Holder (64*) supported him from the other end.
On a wet day four, with 82.1 overs remaining, it appeared an uphill battle for the hosts. With openers falling early and a senior player departing for a duck, it had become a piece of cake for India. The spinners couldn’t get much boom either and the batsmen wasted no time negotiating for it. At tea, the hosts had the favourites sweating. An hour and a half later, they forced Kohli to take the draw. The first draw at Sabina Park since 1998.
Rallying well on hand in this series, few could have predicted what was in store for the Indian bowlers. After bowling their opponents in almost last 16 consecutive test innings, India’s bowlers would have fancied the plan of picking off the rest of the WI batting line-up on a day 5 pitch.
While chase will get the praise for this great escape, the three other batsmen (Jason Holder-64*, Shane Dowrich-74, Jermaine Blackwood-63) scored over half centuries and played their part in the chase. The 144 run partnership between Chase and Dowrich was very impressive. It is the best partnership the West Indies have managed by a distance.
Going forward, this mammoth effort by the W. Indies middle order will considerably boost their confidence heading to the third Test at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia. The pitch in Gros Islet is one of the best Caribbean pitches and will carry good pace which should aid the West Indies seamers to get a bit more of an attacking edge, but it will also support Indian seamers who have been bowling well this series.
“It was a great feeling. I could help my side draw a Test match. A fifer and a hundred, I couldn’t have asked for any better. I’m equally capable of batting and bowling but I enjoy my batting more. It’s a nice feeling, I know it’s a crucial game and just keep learning with every day. The captain asked us to show some fight. We just fought hard till the end, Dowrich unfortunately fell short. I’m happy with the draw but I would have liked a win”
– Roston Lamar Chase
After the 2nd test match it would be compelling to see some good cricket going into the 3rd test where the hosts will be looking to level the series and Team India will be looking to seize the series.
